Today I passed-by her again. Even though it’s exam period, I tried to express my feeling in an awkward poem. My artistic fren, Yong Han, had tried his best to rewrite it into a poem of classical style that actually rhymes. But the more impressive thing is: the romantic poem is envisaged by a beautiful portrait. It’s simply unspeakable how talented he is.

Frens who know my chinese name would be able to guess why did i use ‘rain’ in the poem. And in the later part of the poem, I was trying to say that the girl felt good under the rain and she was wondering if she could do that again. Hope that the readers would not feel too strong about the existence of a particular guy. Enjoy the greatest work of arts from sps — a program for enthusiastic
scientists.

I decided to write about movie reviews today, coz I’d just watched a couple of nice movies in these two days. It was lucky to get the downloaded video files of “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset” from my fren, and to have joined him for “Saving Face” in the cinema. The movies have given me so much pleasure that it provokes my desire for more of this kind of “good” movies. Well, the “good” is actually a relative term. Some people may find those big-spending Hollywood trashes with ever-presence nudism and outrageous gruesome entertaining. But I have to say that I have been bored by their tricks, and my impulse for going to movies has never since recovered. Rather than throwing my criticisms against current blockbuster’s trend, I would spend most of the pages sharing my views on those three movies. They are not thrillers with shocking aftereffect and no where near a masterpiece. But, they definitely worth a try.

Before Sunrise (1995)

The background story is about a young American student (Ethan Hawke) meeting a French lady (Julie Delpi) on the train towards Paris passing by Vienna. He then asked the lady to be his company in Vienna for the remaining hours until he flew back to Texas the next morning. This beautiful lady accepted his invitation and the movie set out with the juicy conversation between the characters till the end of the show. Huh? What! Do you mean they just talked? Exactly. The whole movie is about these two main characters talking about life, relationship, and even reincarnation while wandering on the beautiful streets of Vienna. And they were in love with each other. I won’t spoil the thing by telling you the ending, but by following logically with what mentioned above, the guy had to part with the girl. Here happened an important twist that was followed up in the sequel.

Before Sunset (2004)

Jesse (Hawke) was on a book signing session in Paris. He had written a best-seller, based on an encounter with a French lady on the train. Celine (Delpi) obviously knew about the session and came to the bookstore. They met again after nine years. (Please note that the sequel is made exactly after nine years.) Jesse had to catch the flight in the evening, so they went out for a brief chat in the cafe. Again, they talked throughout the movie while walking on the yet more beautiful streets in Paris. The differences were: last time it was during the night; while this time it was near sunset. And they wandered around last time; while this time, Celine kept urging Jesse to catch his flight and he kept dragging on. Beside that, Jesse had married with a kid and Celine was dating a journalist photographer who was always working away from Paris. And of course, the ending was unimaginable.

Here comes my comments on the two movies by Richard Linklater. First point goes to the creative style of expressing the movie by conversation. I am not sure if it was the first; it’s probably not. The conversations were smartly scripted with intelligent and interesting contents. This first (1995) focused more on relationship as well as flirting conversation. And I agreed that some of their insights were shallow and meaningless (they were still young right?). Nonetheless, it’s all about romance. And my favorite parts would be the cafe scene where they pretended to call back to their respective frens with all those seductive lines. And the part near the end where Jesse said he wanted to capture Delpi’s face into his mind. The point that they did not exchange contact no. was just another spectacular one. They did not want to end up like another pair of ordinary lovers. Instead, they let fate to play the role. One weak link would be the near impossibility of a young lady accompanying a stranger overnight in a foreign place. They seemed to have trusted each other too soon. In overall, it loses a bit to its sequel (2004).

The sequel was more towards the mature theme. Their conversations were filled with topics about global crisis, philosophy, family responsibility, etc. And how they admitted their feelings near the end has shown that adults are sometimes confused and indecisive about relationship too. It’s also shown that girl can lie as good as guy. Delpi was hiding her feeling all the ways and it succeeded in luring me into the perception of Jesse loved her more than she did to him. Another bonus point would be the cinematography employed here. The camera was shooting from their front as Jesse and Celine were talking and walking on the streets. To me, the “flowing background” has terrific visual effect. Try and feel it yourself. The last point to be mentioned here is the magnificent scenery along the Danube River. Well, I am sort of crazy about European architecture, beside blooming sakura trees along the river.

I have to warn younger viewers that the word “f*****g” did appear in their conversations. So, here comes the conflict between Chinese tradition/Christianity of giving in the bride’s first night on her wedding day and the modern liberal sexual relationship. I am not arguing which side is correct, but instead, I would like to ask for comments on whether the feeling of love plays a role in sexual engagement. My personal opinion is that guys do not actually need love to have sexual intercourse with someone. It’s hormone that drives your sexual impulse. But it is the feeling of love that makes someone refrains himself from engaging in sex with other women. My point is: it may not be 100% of the feeling of love that drives the guy to make love with his lover, even though he really loves her. And the case of he truly loving her is justified by the fact that he has the complete rationality to leave the place where a slut might be trying to seduce him, keeping in mind that he cannot possibly do something that hurts her. Haha^^ Is anyone shocked by my opinion? Well, I welcome any attacking or suggestive comments. Hey! Please note that the above is just my own thinking about issues in sexual relationship and I don’t have any experience related to that issue.

OMG! This post is so long! I shall cont. my discussion on “Saving Face” in the next issue of my Annalen — a movie about two America-born chinese lesbian and her pregnant mother who refused to tell the identity of the father of the baby.

Dear primary sch-mates, secondary sch-mates, close friends, and hav-fun friends,

I am happy to share with you all my recent high-and-low in life here in this blog. I told my friend I would never write a blog ") , but… We all must have changed alot, thus this is a good way to "update" ourselves before we meet again. First of all, why Leo’s Annalen? Coz I would only update this blog after a long period of time to conclude recent changes to my life.

A Brief History of Mine: After high-sch graduation from STTSS, I enrolled on a A-Level course in TT Pre-U Center. All from Sabah should know where is it right? I’ve got a so-so result only: ABBB. After that, I was admitted into NUS (National University of Singapore), studying life-sciences. Why life-sciences? Coz I have always been thinking to discover some ways to study life with mathematics. Yes, you can say I am stupid. Even if it would happen one day, it’s not my generation. Nonetheless, the emerging field of systems biology seems like a good promise.

So, how has my life changed in NUS? Personally, emotionally, behaviorally, that’s alot, too much to be imaginable. Physically, I have become stronger. I work-out irregularly, and I have gained weight! From 57kg the time I entered NUS, to 65kg last year, and now 72kg^^ Any taller? Nope, don’t think so. But for sure I play even better basketball, start playing soccer and can run 10km in 50 min. These are all the results of my training for a mountaineering program (I’ve quitted). About my academics, that’s really a regret for my first year. I started to change in my 2nd year, coz my one-month journey to Germany was a turning point in my life. It just coincided with my 21st birthday! Ok, that’s not enough in view of my results in NUS. Nvm, the game has just begun, and I’ve just warmed up my engine…hehe, just some self-consolation.

I have taken German course level 1 to 4 in NUS. Basically, I can converse quite comfortably in German, but not error-proof. My favorite music has changed from Billboard top charts to Jpop, coz there’s no more the old-time Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Babyface, and Boyz II Men. Besides, I enjoy watching animes so much. Their dimensions of imagination is so wide so that I can be easily trapped inside. Beside all of these, what else do I often think about? Yeah, you are right — girls. (Just an addition, I’ve quitted philosophy long time ago.) Well, I will talk about girls later on.

Latest updates in this semester…I have started a research project on "histones". For those biologists, I am actually trying to find out which proteins bind to a certain covalently modified histone-tail in yeast. This is a one-year thing, which is currently depriving my life. Research is on one hand challenging; on another hand very time-consuming. It’s even worse when you work under a boss who is totally ignorant of communication. Anyway, my plan for the future is to work on protein folding. Any companion? I am sure any breakthrough in protein folding would hand you the next Nobel prize. Ha! Dreaming again…Yume ka?

I currently stay on campus, but not in the hostel…it’s a secret public place where I have the luxury of a long table to lie on every night, a working table to study, and air-con. It’s not my lab; I won’t sleep with bacteria. I actually put all my stuff in two large lockers in the sports complex, where I used to shower before I was terrified by a homo once there. Aha! Is this an exciting life? Probably, in the beginning. I just wanted to try, to experience it. Anyway, I am going to move back to the hostel next semester. All I can say is, it is a great experience, and my perception of many things has changed to the good. The bad thing is: well, I won’t tell you how many days I’d take a shower. ")

This issue of my Annalen is long enough. I shall continue on a new one…
